Service: Growing media nutrient and water holding capacity analysis

You might be interested in the service if you:
  • are a nursery grower and need to trouble shoot media problems

Where samples typically come from
  • Growing media
  • Soilless mixes

How you need to prepare the sample before submission. Instructions on sample submission
Send or drop off dry sample of growing media. Samples should be about 500 ml (2 cups) of gently packed media. You can submit your sample in a clean plastic container or large freezer bag. No other preparation on your behalf is required. For your convenience, feel free to download and print the sample submission form. Then simply attach the completed form to your sample when submitting.

What happens to your sample after we receive it. Analytical Methods and Technical Information.
The first step in the analysis of your growing media is to saturate it with distilled water. At this point we can calculate the water holding capacity. We then take the saturated media and perform a vacuum extraction to collect the leachate (the water that is drained from the media). We then analyze the leachate by autoanalyzer (for ammonium, nitrate) and ICP-AES (for all other elements).
